vicious cycle, but finally found my comfort zone after many years struggling to be a “morning person”.
I didn’t start drinking coffee until later in life than most, but it has helped a bit to power through the mornings. Able to resist the urge to nap and the bed is only used when it’s time to sleep. Not sure there is enough data out there to support this stimulus control helps with insomnia as often suggested, but it has helped me.
I have onset sleep insomnia but 25mg of Seroquel gives me a good night sleep with fewer side effects than any other medication. I actually use a combo of 25mg Seroquel, 1 mg melatonin and about 25ml of EtOH as a consistent and reliable way to knock myself out. I have had onset sleep insomnia my whole life, and this fixes it. I can keep a regular 12-8 sleep schedule and have a normal job where I can start at 9 AM. I am a bit groggy in the morning but this has also been true my whole life. I tried 2.5mg of THC to sub for the EtOH but the half life is too long.
Like you I need exercise. I prefer to sleep alone but a nightly pre-sleep orgasm helps. Naps are bad but 2PM caffeine is not good either. I have experimented with a 15 minute power nap with mixed results. It’s take me decades of experimenting to get this right.
I am installing blackout curtains now. It is hard to sleep to 8 this time of year.
I always use morning caffeine. It definitely boosts my cognitive ability until my normal “up” cycle which starts around 3 PM and lasts until 10 or so.

No laying on the couch either.
When I have a problem on my mind, I become obsessed and can't sleep until I figure it out so I need to exhaust myself to sleep.
